Pirates of silicon valley movie reflection

1.What are the factors that contributed to the success and failures of Steve Jobs as a technopreneur?
 \
There’s a lot of factors that contributed to the success and failures of Steve Jobs in his career and as a technopreneur and some of these factors are listed below:

His Foster Parents
Steve was just a simple man living in a simple world with big dreams. He was an adopted child and tried to look for his real biological parents. His adopted father taught him how to work with electronics. They used to fixed electronic devices in their garage. Steve's adopted parents have supported him. They send him to school and enrolled him in an expensive college because they have promised Steve Jobs's biological parents that they will provide him good education and good future. They also let Steve Jobs together with his friends used their garage as they form their company, the Apple Computer Corporation. His foster father have molded him to what Steve Jobs is right now. By this, we could actually say that his foster parents are the biggest factor to his success.

His friends and colleagues
Aside from his ever supportive foster parents, another factor that contributed to Steve Jobs’s success is his friends. When he was only sixteen years old, Bill Fernandez, one of his friend and neighbor, who is also have the same interests in electronics, introduced him to Steve Wozniak (Woz). Steve Wozniak is also a computer and electronics geek. He is five years older than Steve Jobs (Woz is twenty one years old when they became friends with Steve Jobs). He invented the Apple 1 computer when he worked together with Ronald Wayne and Steve Jobs in Jobs' garage. They called their company as Apple Computer Company for Steve Jobs have been harvesting apples as a job for some time. Without their help, Apple computers will never be this successful. It is not always Steve Jobs alone. It is the team he created. It is the people who worked hard to fulfill his ideas.

His Vision and Dream
Changing the way technology works in the world has been Steve Jobs’s dream. And this is another factor that brought him to succeed in his life. Steve Jobs is a perfectionist type of person, he wants everything to fall into places and he is very strict when it comes to time management. He doesn’t want something goes wrong. This attitude of his is another factor for his success. He is a man of dreams and whatever he comes up with, he always deals it and prove to other that he can do things in his way. He will do anything to make something new. I can still remember that there was part in the movie which he scolded one of his employees from sleeping inside the office. This scene indicates that he doesn’t like people who he thinks that are not productive and helpful to whatever goal he wants to reach. Another thing, what factor made him this successful is how he communicates and deals with people. Steve Jobs has the capability to reach people by convincing them to trust him.

His Intelligence
No doubt that his Intelligence and his creative mind also makes a great impact to his career. His brain is filled with knowledge of new and fresh ideas. He always think outside the box, just like what our Technoprenuership instructor wanted us to do. He never satisfies himself until he gets what he really wants until it leads him to do bad things like stealing ideas from other people. There is a line in the movie where Steve Jobs said, “Good artists copy, great artists steals”. Steve Jobs steals ideas from various computer and consumer electronics companies. He stole Xerox PARC’s mouse-driven graphical user interface for his new computer, Apple Lisa, where he named it from his newly born daughter.

Steve Job as a Risk Taker
Steve Jobs is a risk taker. This attitude leads him to success and failures. He always comes up with a risky idea. Steve Jobs sold his car and took a risk of using the money in starting his Apple Computer Company. He also chose to drop out of the university, and start their production of the machine they invented which they called the "Blue Box". The Blue Box that they created that can intercept signals to avail a free call. And that made it illegal and the authorities are doing their job in finding the people behind this. Because, Steve Jobs was very into making money out of the machines that they have created. And so, they continued in making more Blue Boxes. And there was a time when they almost got caught on the streets selling these Blue Boxes but luckily, the officers have no idea what a Blue Boxes is so they were freed after.

His uncontrollable emotion
Steve Wozniak noticed and realized that Steve Jobs is acting weirder than before. Steve gets angry most of the time that he thinks that his anger is uncontrollable, especially when someone talks about his unacknowledged daughter, Lisa. It also seems that power has controlled his mind. He loves seeing his own employees having fights about 'whose team is the best' inside his company and Steve Wozniak (Woz) was concerned about this. Then, he was ejected from his own company by John Sculley, the president of Apple Computers at that time. Because of these events, is very obvious that Steve Jobs had failed. But this never stopped him from continuing creating useful technology. He proved that he is capable and deserves to be back to the company that he started. And after that, he made lots of collaborations with different companies and became successful.

After watching the movie and seeing how Steve Jobs succeeded in life,It inspired me work harder and do things better to achieve the same success he has achieved. He inspired a lot of people most especially the young minds through his perseverance and intelligence. Steven Paul Jobs (Steve Jobs) had his ups and downs in his life but he never give up to reach his goals.

2. How do you see yourself as a Technopreneur?

I thought that taking up Bachelor of Science in Information Technology is as easy as a piece of cake, and everything would be smoothly flowing in my accordance’s desire. But I was wrong. I under estimated the field of computer. I’ve discovered and realized that the world of computer is a wide and complicated world just like our universe. As the years go by, I’ve tried and experienced some different types of programming languages like c++, java and etc. and strategies on making a program and web designing. In this particular moment, worries, consciousness and being clueless were covering my heart, my soul and my brain. I was afraid of the reality that if ever I did not master every bit of codes of making a program, where would be my future fall. In my mind is that there will be no sense of finishing this course if I cannot use it in my future job. Until Technopreneurship was introduced to us by our facilitator. Without any biased, this is the only subject that gives me the chance, the hope and the other way to dream of becoming successful someday.

When I heard the word Technopreneur the first thing that comes in my mind is a person who makes new technology like Gadgets, Machines and Software for business. Technopreneurs used these new technologies to earn and to gain money. Most people thought that technopreneurs are somewhat similar to entrepreneurs. Yes, these two has similarities when we talk about business attitudes like being a Hardworker and willing to stick with a project and having the ability to determine risk and has the courage to take risks. But I think that Technopreneurship has a bigger picture since it deals with technology as well as business compare to Entrepreneurship. Being a technopreneur is a lot more risky than having a conventional job routine. There is no regular salary and you have to find customers on your own. Marketing your product and service and financing the project are also a concern that requires a thicker skin. I noticed that most technopreneur use a combination of due diligence and gut instincts while evaluating their product and service. They are good at spotting a need in the market and then backing themselves up to believe that their idea can fill that need. If someday I would become a technopreneur I should trust and believe in my own ideas and start depending on myself, I should not underestimate myself and the things that I can do. Another quality of being a good technopreneur that I want to acquire is having the  passion and the will to achieve my goals. Having a strong passion is a big factor in this kind of business. Just like Steve Jobs did, he has the characteristics of being passionate on his career even though he was sometimes rejected by his capitalist and also whenever he loans for capital in the bank, but still he strive for his ambition, he works hard until his little own company discovered.

Before I answer the question “How do I see myself as a technopreneur”. I must ask myself first the question, do I have the skills and abilities of becoming a technopreneur? For me, In order to become an effective Technopreneur you must have a creative, dynamic and innovative mind in generating fresh and new ideas to provide a solution for a certain problem. You should be able to explore the world of technology. Also a good technopreneur for me, requires a higher understanding and knowledge as far as technology and business is concern. Business and Technology must jive together. Right now, I think that I still need more time to acquire all the knowledge that I really need, digest and process it and apply this knowledge in order to become a technopreneur.

As of now I can’t see myself as a technopreneur. But I already have some ideas in my mind, too. It may not be as great, as solid and as reachable as to the technologies that Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates have created, but I know someday, I can use these ideas  as a tool in becoming a successful technopreneur. Success cannot be achieved overnight. It requires a lot of sacrifices that would definitely test how strong and capable you are. There are requirements in order  to achieve success but not in an easy way. A person needs to have skills. Skills that given by God that every person has. It is only for me to develop these and enhance. Another requirement would be abilities. Skills when developed and enhanced would soon become a part of me and eventually become my secret weapon towards success. A person equipped with abilities could easily find ways and means overcome difficulties that he might encounter along the way. Abilities are also needed in order to perform my job well. The ability to make decisions and feasible plans would help me a lot in traversing my way towards the long and narrow path of success. My skill and abilities are my greatest investments in order to profit and gain. My character would be the final determinant whether or not we would be able to reach my destiny. My character counts. Skills and abilities would mean nothing without my character. Success would be within our reach if we possess these three qualities- skill, ability and character. Many people fail to attain their objectives in life because they lack one of these characteristics in the whole package of a successful technopreneur.

I will not stop learning and gaining new knowledge on  how to develop devices like machines, software, programs, and many more. With my dedication, perseverance, and the love for what I am doing, I know I can improve myself in this field.  No one can tell what my future would be. Maybe after five or ten years from now I’ll be able to set up and start up my own business to provide jobs for my fellow men and to help them also to become successful. I hope in that time duration, I can improve all my skills.

3. Would you take the same career path that Steve Jobs took? Why or why not?

Seeing how successful Steve Jobs is after all the failures and challenges he had faced in his life makes me do things better and gives me inspiration to work harder in life. With his determination in his field of work, he is considered as a "man of success". Steve is the chairman and chief executive officer of the well-known Apple Company. Steve Jobs’s great ideas, genius mind and innovations helped him a lot to become successful. Through his great technologies, Steve Jobs changed many people’s lives. He helped a lot of people to live life a lot easier. His philosophy in life is to "change the world" , and it made him where he is right now. Steve Jobs comes from nobody to somebody, “From Rags to Riches” and that is because of his great mind and innovations. Steve Jobs became very successful in his field of work and it is because of his passion and willingness to do things. Through of his passion, he is now considered as one of the greatest man in the history,  he can think easily with new ideas and create new things. Steve did a great job with his innovative mind dealing with the technology, he pursue things that are sometimes complicated to make life easier. He always thinks with all the possible things and he never think negatively and he do not believe in the word "impossible". Steve only thinks positive, because of being an optimistic person he defeat anyone and keep himself on top. Steve's great mind and of being smart made his creations in reality. Also, because he never quits in exploring new things with his skills and talents, Steve will always be the best. Steve Jobs is determined with all his works especially on dealing with fresh, first and new technology.

Throughout his life, Steve had a great "bozo" detector (“bozo” is a stupid, rude, or insignificant person, especially a man). He did a great job in detecting and of not letting bozos proliferate at his companies. He eliminate them out if they were there - until they weren't.  You'll never be perfect at it and neither was Steve but the key thing is that bozos sucks a high amount of energy from you and the best people in the company working with you. Bozos make bozo decisions (dumb and stupid decisions). Bozos hire worse bozos beneath them. Stamp them out. And you should not  let them take root around you.

The obstacles Steve had face made him more determined in pursuing things he wanted to do. In his college years, together with his circuit boards, Steve keeps on learning and experimenting to achieve those goals to create best technology. Though, Steve do not have nothing, he never discouraged himself nor dismay because he knows what important is hid determination and the will that he can have the ideas to make something great. For him without having anything is not a hindrance on what he has achieved now. He believed that with your willingness on something and exerting effort to something will help you to make great things.

We all know that Steve Jobs is undoubtedly successful in his career. Although Steve Jobs experienced many failures in life compare to his success Steve Jobs still manage to pursue the things he really wants. Steve Job's is such an inspiration especially to the youth who are craving for new knowledge. Just having thoughts that he started his career at very young age and become successful bring me to reality that I must also begin the steps towards my future. Steve Jobs is just an awesome creature. He is an incredible human being created by God to transform people’s lifestyle. It’s just amazing to know that the wonders of technology came only from enormous ideas of a young man who tried taking risks and put it into action. His remarkable breakthrough in the field of technology brought hope and opportunity for all people.

Because of this man’s success, we can actually say that the path that he had chosen is the right path, right? After all, Steve Jobs showed strong desire, expertise and enthusiasm for success in his field. He is really good in technopreneurship because he has this mindset for innovation. If he was able to have a successful life, why can’t we? But, I guess, I do not belong to this field that Steve Jobs have taken.

Now, if someone you would ask me if I would take the same career path that Steve Jobs took? I would probably say that I will not follow his career path simply, because I have my own way of making myself successful. I may not be passionate about making big things and marketing big products, but I believe that I have the factors to become successful in my field through my own ways. I will not take the same career path that he took it is because I do believe that each one of us can achieve our own success without copying and doing what others did. And this time I will go to the thing that will make me happy. If Steve Jobs feel so contented and happy in this field and became successful, then I should also choose the path that will make me happy as well for this will give me success.

Steve Jobs’s showed positive attitudes like his determination, passion and his perseverance towards his work and that are the things that I want to acquire from him and apply it to my own path in reaching my goals and succeed in life. And for me nothing is impossible with God no matter what path you will choose, one thing that is important is, you are determine, you know what you are doing and the passion of what you are doing. Every day of our lives is valuable that you do not must take any advantage but you must do all the things that you wanted to do as long as you know that it is good for you and to others and also would help you  become a successful person.

Technopreneurship (1st Meeting)

On the first day of our meeting with our beloved facilitator, We immediately had a short assessment to test how good we are in following some simple and tricky instructions from our facilitator, then later on we introduced ourselves to him and in front of our classmates. Each one of us tells our personal expectations for our subject Technopreneurship, as well as our expectations from our facilitator. It’s quite intimidating and frightening to be honest standing and talking in front of our facilitator because he is well known for his strict and high standard way of teaching that made our college Institute of Computing capable of producing excellent graduate students. My expectation for our subject is simple and it will help me build my confidence in talking and facing towards other people, to generate fresh and new ideas that is profitable and of course to become an effective practitioner of Technopreneurship and Information Technology. To help me reach these goals is what I’m expecting from our facilitator. After we finished introducing ourselves, Sir told us some important things that we need to keep in ours minds in order to pass this subject and the things that we should expect from him and from the subject. At the end he gave us a pep talk to boost our confidence and encouraged us to do well and to be more active in joining local and national business plan competitions like “Philippine Emerging Startups Open (PESO)”, “Smart Sweep” and other well-known competitions to pass this subject.

In our next meeting we had our first formal discussion about Technopreneurship but before that we had an activity wherein our facilitator showed us nine dots forming a square shape and we were asked to connect those nine dots in just four strokes without lifting our hands. Personally I find this activity difficult because I tried my very best to connect those dots but I still didn’t get it, but luckily one of my classmate got it and showed us how he gets it. Our facilitator told us that this activity has something to do with Technopreneurship, he said to become a successful individual in the field of Technopreneurship you have to think outside the box. It means you need to be more creative in creating and generating new and fresh ideas in order to succeed in this field. After that our facilitator told us his story on how he gathered high-profiled personnel in different institution here in davao and came up with the idea of spreading and sharing this precious knowledge (Technopreneurship) to others in the whole Mindanao.

When we hear the word Technopreneurship the first thing that comes in our minds is Entrepreneurship because they almost sound similar. Technopreneurship and Entrepreneurship actually jives together when we talk about things like business plans, entrepreneurial skills and entrepreneurial aspects. There is a strong connection between Technological development, Innovations and entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship forms the sub structure upon which science and technology are built. As we understand it, Technopreneurship is, by a large part, still Entrepreneurship. The difference is that Technopreneurship is either involved in delivering an innovative hi-tech product makes use of hi-tech in an innovative way to deliver its product to the consumer. Technopreneurship is not a product but a process of synthesis in engineering the future of a person, an organization, a nation and the world. Strategic directions or decision-making processes are becoming more demanding and complex. This requires universities, and in site professional development programs and training to produce strategic thinkers who will have skills to succeed in a rapidly changing global environment. Our facilitator talks about the right way of mind setting. He explained the usual and default mindsets that most of our parents have which is the mindset of sending their children to school to have good grades and gain knowledge and land in a high-paying job which is called the “Employment Mindset”. In contrast to that mindset, I learned that there is an Alternative mindset called the “Technopreneur Mindset” wherein instead of dreaming of having or finding a high-paying job when you earned your degree, you are the one who is creating and offering a job. In other words instead of becoming an employee you are the employer or should I say you are the Boss. And you can only achieve it by utilizing the knowledge you acquired, your skills, talent, creativity and passion to innovate and create new things by the use technology. Our facilitator also emphasized that Davao City is the greatest producers of best graduates here in Mindanao in the field of ICT but unfortunately these best individuals that Davao City have are being lured by other cities like Cebu and Manila by offering them an attractive and high compensations, leaving all the average and low experienced graduates here in Davao. It is quite alarming because cities like Cebu City and Manila is progressing in terms of technology compare here in Davao and it is because of some our best IT Professionals. And sadly nowadays, mostly of ICT courses graduates finds it hard to land on a job most especially those fresh graduates because most IT companies hires best and experienced individuals which is quite not fair for fresh graduates who doesn’t acquired any job experience yet in their field. We also tackled and learned about the SEED Model which stands for Self-Mastery, Environment-Mastery, Enterprise-Mastery and the Development. This Model aims to help anyone to become a better technopreneurs in the field of Technopreneurship. Self-Mastery, simply talks about knowing oneself like knowing what you want and what you do not want. It is a process of identifying your strengths and weaknesses and using these in weaknesses as your strength to deal with problems. A self-mastered person does not need a high Intelligence Quotient (IQ) but it does require a high level of Emotional Quotient (EQ) and Adversity Quotient (AQ). Environment-Mastery, means knowing the environment and the industry you are in. An Environment-Mastered person treats every problem as an opportunity to find solution to deal with a certain problem. Enterprise-Mastery, pertains to the knowledge of the different enterprise disciplines such as creating the business, marketing management, operations management, financial management, risk management. An enterprise-mastered person understands and integrates the functions of management (It involves marketing, human resource, operations, and finance), understands and integrates the process of management (It involves the planning, organizing, directing, and controlling process), leads and inspires rather than manage. And the last phase of the SEED Model is the Development, It is now the time of making your business plan that covers the writing, presenting and depending part of your business plan and also adding refinements to your business plan.

There is also what we call the Macro and the Micro Strategy in Technopreneurship ecosystem. When we talk about Macro Strategy, it is a strategy in Technopreneurship that targets a bigger and wider range like Domestic and International IT Market, IT-Enabled Hotels and Tourist Destinations, IT-Friendly Real Estate Environment, Technology Business Incubators,Venture Capitalists and Funding Institutions, IT Business Incentives and Legal Framework, IT Parks and Buildings, Domestic and International IT Market, Domestic and International Locators, Business Enterprises and Gov’t Agencies and etc. while Micro Strategy focuses only on a school based Technnopreneurship ecosystem. It involves the Curriculum components which helps students from first year to third year generate ideas, use their creativity and innovation, the next stage is the Events components. In this stage the ideas generated by the students is now ready to compete in a local and national competitions like (PESO) Philippine Emerging Startups Open and the last stage is the Infrastructure Components, wherein the ideas generated are ready to be deploy in the real industry. Today Davao is considered as the IT hub of Mindanao and possibly considered as the capital IT hub of the Philippines in the near future according to BIMP-EAGA, Asia. It becomes the source and home of highly competent & efficient IT professionals with sound social & ethical standards. Schools in Davao like University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) become more renowned worldwide for producing such graduates. And it keeps on providing high quality of education that makes its student’s globally competitive.

To sum up my reflection for our first meeting in the Technopreneurship class. I am very excited and I am looking forward to gain knowledge in Technopreneurship to gear me up in facing and entering in the real industry and to become an effective practitioner of Technopreneurship and Information Technology. I am also grateful that Institute of Computing (IC) offered Technopreneurship as a course subject in BSIT course because I got the chance to acquire and absorb all the knowledge that this subject has to offer. And I am also hoping that all activities that our facilitator has given to us will help me gain confidence in sharing my fresh and new ideas not just in our room but hopefully in a wider audience. It truly inspired me to become a successful technopreneur in the future to not just to make money out of problems but also provide valuable ideas and solution that will help the communities to become a better one.

Technopreneurship (5th meeting)

In my previous reflection, I discussed about the SWOT Analysis, which is a structured process and a useful technique that is commonly u...
